A teenager who violently robbed women of their cars at a West Midlands tram station has been jailed following a British Transport Police (BTP) investigation.

Tyrone Downing, 19, from Wolverhampton, was jailed for four years at Wolverhampton Crown Court on 26 August after pleading guilty to three counts of Robbery, two counts of Theft of a Motor Vehicle and Attempted Robbery.

His crimes all took place at Wednesbury Parkway station in the West Midlands between July 2024 and March 2025.

The first occurred on 26 July 2024 when Downing approached a woman at the tram stop wearing a balaclava. She managed to run away when her car keys were demanded but was punched in the face from behind when doing so.

Then, less than two weeks later, on 8 August 2024, a man was robbed of his iPhone at the station. A small knife was produced during the robbery which was used to slash the victim’s arm.

On 27 August 2024 Downing approached a woman who was pushing her baby in a pram and demanded her car keys. She refused, so he struck her on the head before taking the keys and driving away from the station in her Ford Fiesta.

His final crime took place at the station on 31 March 2025 when he held a woman at knifepoint and insisted she handed over her car keys.

After taking them from her, Downing pushed her to the ground and drove away from the tram station in her Audi A3.

A thorough investigation led by BTP detectives linked Downing to all four offences using CCTV footage, victim accounts and forensic evidence.

He was arrested in Wolverhampton on 19 April 2025, and the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) authorised the series of charges against him.

On Downing’s social media accounts detectives also uncovered videos he’d captured driving the stolen cars. Despite extensive efforts, the stolen vehicles were never recovered.

BTP Detective Constable Aaron Murdoch said: “Tyrone Downing is a callous and violent offender who deliberately targeted women to steal their cars.

“The psychological impact of these offences should not be underestimated, and I hope his prison term provides the victims with some measure of justice and closure.

“Securing this conviction required a painstaking investigation. We reviewed hundreds of hours of CCTV footage and carried out extensive digital and forensic enquiries to link Downing to the crime spree and build an overwhelming case against him.

“Violent robbers have no place on the railway, and Downing will now have plenty of time behind bars to reflect on that fact.

“If you experience or witness robbery on the railway, report it to us by texting 61016.”
