Are complaints involving CED taken seriously?
Yes. All complaints about police activity are taken seriously. In the case of CED, any complaint that is made is recorded and investigated by the force concerned. In the rare case of a death or serious injury, which can occur in association with the use of any type of force, it becomes mandatory for the force to refer the matter to the Independent Office for Police Conduct. The IOPC will then conduct a thorough independent investigation.
The police definition of a CED complaint is:
“Any complaint directly relating to the deployment or use of CED where CED has directly affected the outcome or persons involved, or where the complainant feels that CED was an issue.”
This is only guidance, and the perceived involvement of CED in a complaint will be recorded and investigated thoroughly.
