We have jurisdiction over railway property, and we deploy an array of tactics to deter and detect crime, including uniformed police, plain-clothed officers, and access to over 150,000 CCTV cameras on the railway network.
As part of our ongoing crime prevention and detection strategy, we deploy additional security systems and CCTV for the prevention and detection of crime and passenger and staff safety across England, Scotland and Wales. These deployments are largely centred on Railway Property. The CCTV is deployed tactically at crime hotspots and for situation awareness and for crowd safety at events.
When travelling on the railway network, you may be subject to CCTV monitoring and body worn video and audio by TFL, Network Rail and Train Operating Companies.
Our primary remit is to protect railway property, staff, passengers and customers within. Most railway property has existing security technology deployed, and signs posted by the relevant railway operator. Staff, passengers and customers have an expectation security technology will be used to gather evidence in the event an incident is reported. Our deployments mainly enhance already existing technology deployed.
The CCTV deployments are re-deployable systems that are deployed for the length of time required to achieve the policing objective. These are not permanent solutions. These CCTV systems may contain smart analytics including AI for searches to assist in the investigation for crime. The CCTV cameras are recording 24/7 but are not always live monitored. The CCTV will be reviewed in the event of a reported crime, incident or intelligence.
No live facial recognition is active on these CCTV systems.
