British Transport Police (BTP) has praised local Lewes residents for their role in the aftermath of the train derailment just north of Lewes railway station yesterday (13 August).
The local community came out to assist emergency services and provide support and refreshments to passengers that were on board the 2.24pm London Victoria to Eastbourne service. Landport Community Hub was opened as a place of safety to facilitate medical treatment and offer relief from the hot weather.
More than 100 passengers were travelling on the train and were safely evacuated by emergency responders.
Two people sustained serious injuries which are not deemed life-threatening. They both remain in hospital and the 18 people who were also treated at hospital for less serious injuries have been discharged.
Detectives are now appealing for anyone who was on board the derailed train and haven’t already spoken to police to come forward.
Following its evacuation, many left the area to take alternative routes home. These people are urged to contact BTP by calling 0800 40 50 40 or texting 61016, quoting reference 521 of 13 August.
Our officers remain at the location to manage the scene and support inspectors from the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) as they conduct enquiries to establish the cause of the derailment.
BTP Assistant Chief Constable Ian Drummond-Smith said: "Our thoughts remain firmly with those who were injured and their loved ones. On behalf of BTP, I wish them a full and speedy recovery.
“The response to yesterday's derailment demonstrated the very best of our communities and emergency services. Local Lewes residents and business owners came out in their droves to support affected passengers, providing water and refreshments in extremely hot conditions.
“My thanks and appreciation go to them as well as our officers and emergency service colleagues whose professionalism ensured those on board were brought to safety in incredibly challenging circumstances.
“The public can expect to see a continued police presence at the scene over the coming days as RAIB’s investigation to identify the cause of the derailment continues.”
