Family of teenager who died on the railway pay tribute to him – Kent

The family of 17-year-old Herbie Ballard who died on the railway last month have paid tribute to him.

BTP officers were called to the line near Whitstable at 9.52pm on 22 April to reports of a casualty on the tracks.

Paramedics also attended, and sadly Herbie was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is not being treated as suspicious.  

Herbie’s family said: “Our beautiful son Herbie was a truly remarkable young man – kind, generous, and full of love. He was deeply cherished not only by our family, but also by friends, our local community, and many others whose lives he touched. He embraced life with a rare enthusiasm, always finding joy in each day from the moment he woke until he went to sleep.

“As an uncle and a brother, he was simply the best and devoted his time when he could to his six nieces and nephews, who adored him. He had big dreams for his future and a natural warmth that drew people to him. Loyal to his friends, he was also quietly courageous, standing up for those who struggled at school and offering support without seeking recognition.

“He approached work with energy and pride, and his cheeky sense of humour brought laughter to so many. The impact he made in just 17 years is something we will forever be proud of.

“This tragic loss has left an immense void in our hearts and of all who knew him. Yet, in the hundreds of messages we have received, we have found comfort in seeing just how far his kindness reached. He was a vital part of the Whitstable community and beyond – a young person who made a lasting difference.

“Herbie will always live on in our hearts. His legacy continues through the tribute created in his name by Revival Cafe the place where he worked and grew as a person and developed a passion for cooking before starting his new career in the building trade.  Herbie was proud to work for a cafe that provided Mental Health support for the community, so it is only right that his spirit is remembered in a positive and meaningful way.

Herbie’s family have also released a photo of him. We would now ask for their privacy to be respected as they come to terms with their tragic loss.
