Renewed appeal after further lineside fire – Sheffield

British Transport Police (BTP) officers are releasing images of two men they would like to speak to after another lineside fire in Sheffield.

The incident happened at around 7.40pm on Tuesday 11 August near Beighton Level Crossing.

Two men accessed private Network Rail land and poured ignitable liquid around the site, including railway sleepers, before starting a fire which spread across the dry grass. They then fled the area.

Officers responded along with colleagues from South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service. Fortunately there were no reports of any injuries and the fire was extinguished by 8.35pm.

Officers searched the area at the time, but no one was located.

This is the latest in a spate of fires that have all happened by or close to the line in the Beighton area.

One man has previously been arrested on suspicion of arson and remains on bail.

Officers believe the men in the images could have information that may assist their enquiries.

BTP Sergeant Roy Percival said: “The fire burned a significant area of land which, given parts of the country are in drought, means this is an exceptionally dangerous thing to do. Residents and neighbouring businesses could have been devastated but for the extremely quick response from the Fire Service.

“Anyone trespassing into the area risks incredibly serious harm to themselves and others through that alone. Fire makes the risk to life, surrounding property and railway infrastructure even more significant and puts other members of the public in danger.”

Martin Clews, Network Rail head of safety, health & environment, said: “This was a disturbing and reckless incident, and we encourage anyone with information to contact British Transport Police.

“Trespassing on the railway is not only illegal but extremely dangerous. Deliberately starting fires near the railway puts passengers, railway workers, residents and businesses at unnecessary risk.

“Lineside fires can damage critical infrastructure, disrupt rail services and prevent trains from running safely. Most importantly, they can endanger lives and create serious risks for everyone who uses or lives near the railway.”

Anyone who recognises the men pictured is asked to text BTP on 61016, or call 0800 40 50 40, using the reference 665 of 11 August.

Information can also be given anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
