British Transport Police (BTP) officers are investigating a number of lineside fires in Sheffield that they believe are being started deliberately.
The incidents have all happened by or close to the line in the Beighton Rail Yard area.
Officers were called about the most recent incident at around 9.45pm on Tuesday 16 June and responded with colleagues from South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue.
There was some damage caused to disused railway equipment, but fortunately no injuries were reported.
It follows previous calls to lineside fires in the same area on at around 6pm on 6 June and 8pm on 11 March.
BTP Sergeant Roy Percival said: “While our enquiries are ongoing, our belief is that the timing and proximity of the incidents means these fires are very likely being started deliberately by the same group or individual.
“Anyone trespassing into the area risks incredibly serious harm to themselves and others through that alone. Fire makes the risk to life, surrounding property and railway infrastructure even more significant and puts other members of the public in danger.
“We are increasing patrols in the area and working with our partners at South Yorkshire Police and Network Rail to gather more information.
“Those involved could be teenagers and so I’d urge parents locally to speak to their children if they are out at night, and to ask them about what they are doing and where they are going. The consequences of railway trespass don’t bear thinking about, and one small mistake can easily lead to death or life-changing injuries.
“We are taking this matter incredibly seriously and will take strong enforcement action against anyone involved.”
