A 34-year-old man has been jailed for a year and a half after he sexually assaulted a woman at Birmingham New Street Railway Station.
David Rose of Langsdale Street, Liverpool, was found guilty of two counts of sexual assault, following a weeklong trial at Birmingham Crown Court that concluded on Friday 28 March.
He was sentenced to 18 months in prison and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £187.
The court heard how on Sunday 28 March last year at Birmingham New Street station Rose approached a 19-year-old woman sat on a bench outside the customer reception
After engaging her in conversation he sexually assaulted her.
She sought the help of rail staff who moved her into the reception area but Rose followed her and sat next to her again. When he eventually left the waiting area the woman bravely told staff what had happened to her.
Staff contacted British Transport Police and on officer arrival they found Rose sat in the waiting room where he was arrested.
Investigating officer Detective Constable Aaron Murdoch said: “This was an traumatising incident for the victim, who was preyed upon by Rose. She showed incredible bravery assisting with the investigation
“This type of behaviour will not be tolerated, and I urge anyone who is witness to any incidents such as these in stations or on the railway to use our text number, 61016 to report it to us or call 0800 40 50 40. In an emergency, always dial 999.”
