A 30 year old man has been jailed after he was found guilty of masturbating on a train while staring at a young woman.
Following a British Transport Police investigation, Amanj Mustafa, of Crossland Road, Huddersfield, was sentenced to six and a half months (26 weeks) in jail at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 17 September.
He was also issued with a five year Sexual Harm Prevention Order, placed on the Sex Offenders Register for seven years and ordered to pay a £154 surcharge.
The court heard how, on Tuesday 7 November last year, a 20 year old woman travelling on a service from Leeds to Huddersfield noticed Mustafa staring at her.
When she looked again minutes later she saw that Mustafa was exposing himself and masturbating while looking at her.
She moved to another carriage but soon after was followed by Mustafa who sat further up the carriage and continued to stare at her.
When she left the train at Huddersfield, Mustafa disembarked behind her.
She immediately reported what had happened to a member of station staff who alerted British Transport Police.
Mustafa was identified from a media appeal and handed himself in.
Investigating officer DC James Beasley said: “Mustafa is a sexual predator who saw an opportunity to scare and intimidate a young woman.
“Despite her moving away from him, Mustafa followed in a further attempt to unnerve her.
“The woman was understandably left scared and disturbed by Mustafa’s disgusting actions and I would like to thank her for reporting the incident to us.
“I urge anyone who witnesses or experiences sexual harassment on the railway to report it to us – no report is too small or insignificant and we will always take you seriously. Text us on 61016 or call 0800 40 50 40. In an emergency, always dial 999.”
