Use of Police Powers by the British Transport Police
Section 60AA Criminal Justice & Public Order Act 1994
British Transport Police are conducting various initiatives in response to a rise in Robbery offences on the transport network at this location.
In many cases, these offences are conducted by individuals who conceal their identities by using face coverings.
The overwhelming majority of victims are teenagers. We are committed to keeping the public safe and disrupting these offences.
An authority is now in place under section 60aa of the Criminal Justice & Public Order Act on the Victoria Line between Brixton and Walthamstow Central. It allows a police officer to:
- Remove any item that they reasonably believe is being used to wholly or mainly to conceal the identity of the person wearing it.
- Seize any item which they reasonably believe any person intends to wear wholly or mainly for concealing their identity within the police area.
Failure to comply can result in a conviction: imprisonment for up to one month or a fine to up to £1,000.
