The inaugural Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) Cycling World Championships is taking place at venues in Glasgow and across Scotland over two weeks, between 3 and 13 August.
This historic and innovative event will bring together 13 existing individual World Championships cycling disciplines into one massive event for the first time and British Transport Police in Scotland, led by Chief Superintendent Gill Murray, have been working hard preparing.
With over 2,500 participants, the UCI Cycling World Championships is expected to attract over one million spectators in and around Glasgow which will mean many more tens of thousands of passengers across the rail network.
Speaking ahead of the Championships, British Transport Police Chief Superintendent, Gill Murray, said:
“For this unique busy event, we have been working closely with our Police Scotland and rail industry partners to ensure attendees, passengers and those working on the rail network travel safely and securely on trains and at stations with minimal disruption.
“Our officers will be supported by a whole range of resources, including enhanced patrols, specially trained uniformed and plain clothed officers and police dogs. We will also have eyes everywhere, with access to over 150,000 CCTV cameras across the rail network.
“While I cannot go into the detail of our plans, it’s safe to say that our officers will be located at specific locations at specific times, often going unnoticed. Our officers are specially trained and know exactly what to look for.
“Passengers on the rail network and at stations will also have an important role to play and any behaviours of activities that look out of place should be reported to us by texting 61016, or by calling 0800 40 50 40. In an emergency, people should always dial 999.
“I wish all the participants well and I hope all those attending have an amazing time here in beautiful Scotland.”
People attending the UCI Cycling World Championships can also download the free BTP Railway Guardian app.
