Mobile phone theft accounts for around 45% of thefts reported on
the London Underground. British Transport Police (BTP) is
taking action to combat the rise in this type of crime.
The problem
Mobile phones and their accessories have become increasingly
desirable over the last few years, especially amongst young people.
Phone manufacturers have responded with an array of models which
are seen by many as must have items. As a result, mobile phone
related crime has become an increasing problem, pushing up the
street crime figures in London.
In many cases, awareness and a few simple precautions can save
someone from becoming a victim of this crime. Part of BTP’s
response is to run campaigns to educate the public so fewer
crimes are committed and, where they are, victims are able to
provide information that will help the investigation.
Unfortunately, people also make false theft reports to
claim for a new phone on their insurance. Some consider this a
victimless crime but it is criminal behaviour and fraud. We are
tackling this through education and enforcement action.
What we are doing to tackle
it
BTP officers are targeting a range of criminal behaviours
involving mobile phones on the Underground. These include thefts,
handling and selling of mobile phones and illegally
reprogramming them.
We are keen to hear from anyone who can help. We are
particularly looking for information relating to those involved in
organised mobile phone crime. If you can help, please contact us

Tips to avoid your phone being
stolen
- Avoid displaying your phone in public wherever possible. Set
your phone to vibrate if possible to attract less attention and
never leave it lying around
- Many people use their mobile phones at rail and tube stations –
thieves know this, so if you need to make a call, be aware of your
surroundings
- Try not to walk and talk
- Position yourself where you can easily get help if you need
it
- Keep a record of the unique reference number (IMEI) on your
phone, if supplied with this some networks can permanently disable
the handset if it stolen. To get this, dial *#06#
- Record the model, phone number and PIN number details. Keep
them somewhere safe
- Always use the phone’s security lock or PIN number
- Use an ultra violet property marker. Put your post code and
house number underneath the battery and on the back of the battery
itself
- Register the phone with the Service Provider. If the phone is
reported stolen the SIM card can be blocked
