Current neighbourhood policing priorities

1. Anti-Social Behaviour: Line of route between Barry Town and Llantwit Major

Following recent incidents at Llantwit Major station, reassurance patrols have been increased at stations and on trains between Barry Town and Llantwit Major to address groups of youths travelling to those locations and behaving in an anti social and intimidating manner whilst on the train or at the station. The Neighbourhood Policing Team activity will be on all days, with particular attention being given on Thursday, Friday and Saturday between 5pm and 11pm.

Actions

Throughout the month March we have and will continue to:

  • Increase the number of uniformed patrols to the key locations in order to provide reassurance that we are responding to the problem.

  • Increase the number of uniformed patrols on the trains at key times with a specific objective to provide reassurance to staff working on those services.
  • Positively deter youths from congregating at the stations by recurring visits to problem hot spots.
  • Work with Arriva Trains Wales staff to actively encourage early reporting of incidents of anti-social behaviour.
  • Engage with South Wales Police and Safer Vale in partnership initiatives and operations to combat anti-social behaviour in the Vale of Glamorgan.

2. Passenger Reassurance: Cardiff Central station

Increased patrols at Cardiff Central station continue to be a priority for the Neighbourhood Policing Team, providing reassurance to passengers and staff and deterring criminal activity in the vicinity of the station and Central Sqaure. The policing activity is on all days with particular attention being given between 10am and 8pm.

Actions

Throughout the month March we have and will continue to:

  • Increase the number of uniformed patrols at the location to provide reassurance that we are responding to the problem.

  • Positively identify and deter individuals who frequent the railway station and Central Square for the purpose of commiting criminal acts.
  • Work with Arriva Trains Wales staff and station tenants to actively encourage early reporting of incidents of anti-social behaviour, begging, loitering and retail theft.
  • Engage with South Wales Police in partnership initiatives and operations to combat offences at the locations.

3. Anti-Social Behaviour: Line of route between Pontyclun and Pencoed

A Problem Solving Plan has been created to tackle low level, alcohol related anti social behaviour on trains and at stations between Pontyclun and Pencoed. The Neighbourhood Policing Team will be travelling on trains serving these locations to provide reassurance to passengers and staff. At the stations, the team will take positive action towards those individuals behaving in an anti social manner. The activity will be on all days, with particular attention being given on Thursday, Friday and Saturday between 4pm and 10pm.

Community Engagement

Safer 6 Nations

Both Neighbourhood Policing Teams will be actively involved in the Safer 6 Nations campaign commencing in March 2012. Working in partnership with Cardiff Capital, the teams will be raising awareness of alcohol abuse during the rugby events by handing out beer mats which highlight the dangers of alcohol abuse and give advice to drink a glass of water between drinks. Neighbourhood staff will be out working at the Wales v Italy and Wales v France fixtures during March 2012

Rail Safety Reps Scheme

The Network Rail Safety Reps Scheme, supported by British Transport Police, continues to gather momentum in the South and West Wales region with a total of 17 primary schools successfully signing up to the scheme. PCSOs from Swansea, Cardiff and Pontypridd continue to work tirelessly to promote the scheme, with particular emphasis being given to the primary schools that feed the comprehensive schools that use the railway network to go to and from that place of education. The objective is to have at least 20 schools using the scheme before April 2012.
