Current neighbourhood policing
priorities
|
1. Reducing the number of Assaults on
staff and passengers – focus at all stations
|
Actions
- Perform high visibility patrols on stations and trains to
provide reassurance to station staff and to the travelling
public.
- To work closely with accredited Rail Neighbourhood officers in
providing peace of mind to rail staff and passengers by proactively
Policing hotspot locations which have been identified by
intelligence
Results
- Violence against the person offences in the performance year
from 1st April 2011 to the 31st March 2012
numbered 94. This compares to the previous year in which 96
offences took place. Although not a vast decrease in the
number of offences there has been a significant reduction in the
amount of more violent assaults. ABH offences are down from 25
in the year 2010 – 2011 to just 13 in the same period of 2011 –
2012.
- Officers are continuing to provide high visibility patrols at
stations and on trains in conjunction with Rail Neighbourhood
Officers and Revenue Protection Officers on the Croydon NPT
area. An area of specific interest continues to be the East
Croydon to Streatham line.
|
|
2. Travel Fraud - Focus on all
stations
|
Actions
- To maintain high-visibility and plain clothes patrols at
all stations and trains
- To work in partnership with Train Operating Company
partners such as Rail Neighbourhood Officers and Revenue
Inspectors at all stations and on trains.
Results
- During the performance year of April 2011 to March 2012 there
was a total of 517 anti-social behaviour offences committed on the
NPT stations. 256 of these were Travel fraud related.
This is up from 460 in the same period for the year before.
The reason for this increase will be the increased patrols and
operations that have been happening on the NPT stations.
- Croydon NPT will continue high visibility patrols using Police
Officers, Rail Neighbourhood Officers and Revenue Protection
Inspectors at all stations including hub stations such as East
Croydon and Sutton. We will also continue working with other
partners such as the Metropolitan Police and Surrey Police to
reduce and detect offences.

|
3. Anti-Social Behaviour – focus at all
stations
|
Actions
Results
- 1060 hours have been spent on patrol at
stations covered by Croydon NPT officers in March. This is
down slightly on last month by 11 hours compared to February
2012. During this month officers made 30 arrests during the
course of their duties and spent more time in custody
suites.
- 129 station visits have been conducted
in March by Police Officers on the Croydon NPT. The patrols
were conducted mainly in high visibility uniform to offer
reassurance to the travelling public and staff. However plain
clothes patrols have continued on the NPT area.
- During March e-mails have continued to be received from
members of the public and our railway related partners in relation
to issues in and around the Croydon NPT area. These e-mails
have highlighted issues or have provided intelligence on problems
or ongoing instances in and around the area. All e-mails are
gratefully received and acted upon.

Upcoming Events
Community Engagements
NPT and Core Response officers have recently
started working with Network Rail to try and solve problems that
are occurring at the Mitcham Eastfields level crossing and
station. An officer recently accompanied a Network Rail
representative to a local school to enlighten the students of the
danger the railway environment poses to people. Some students
even got to go in the cab of a train to highlight the risks.
Police and Communities Together (PACT)
meetings
This is a meeting with station staff, shop tenants and managers
discussing issues and problems regarding the stations we
patrol.
Cycle Surgeries / Passenger Surgeries
There have been several offences of theft of
bicycles from stations. Patrols in plain clothes have been
increased to combat this. Passengers are reminded of the need to
secure cycles with good quality locks.
This is also chance for the general public to meet the team and
discuss any issues and problems you have.

Previous Events
Community Engagements
Officers have finished a campaign of handing out handing out
small posters contact cards to all business units that are being
operated on the stations covered by the NPT to reinforce the
message that we are here to help and how to contact BTP should
there be a problem. These posters are small enough to display
in windows and on the front of tills and are designed to deter any
would-be thieves or trouble makers. Contact cards and large
posters have also been given to station supervisors to remind them
of telephone numbers and procedures should problems be encountered
that require Police attendance.
