Olympic Torches at St. Pancras
On Wednesday 8th June, one of the most recognisable symbols of
the Olympic Games, the London 2012 Torch was unveiled at St Pancras
International in a glittering ceremony featuring LOCOG chairman
Lord Seb Coe, Denise Lewis, Jonathan Edwards amidst huge media
attention from London, the UK and around the world.
This is an extremely proud moment for all of us at St Pancras
International, we already have the first London 2012 Shop and, of
course, the famous Rings hanging magnificently in the station. Now
we look forward to making sure the thousands of people using St
Pancras International have the very best experience while
travelling to the Games in 2012.
The 2012 Olympic Torch is one of the most recognised symbols of
the Games. Its design celebrates the vibrancy, strength and
innovation of the Olympic movement while also symbolising British
design, engineering and manufacturing.

the Railsport 5-a-side football tournament in Stanley Park,
Blackpool. The Railsport tournament was held over 2 days and is

Both teams qualified out of the group stages to the knock-out

for either team, but on this occasion, it was the taking part that
mattered...

Undergraduates visit St. Pancras
International
On Monday 16th May, undergraduate students on the
Critical Approaches to Terrorism module took part in a field trip
to Central London. The trip was possible thanks to the courtesy of
Inspector Dixon of British Transport Police, who is responsible for
counter-terrorism in St Pancras International, which is, of course,
an international port, being the terminal for Eurostar.
Students were given a briefing by Inspector Dixon on the law and
counter-terrorism policy in general and on specific issues facing
police in St Pancras. This was followed by a demonstration of the
skills of the explosive dog handlers in the car park, where the
dogs and their handlers showed the students how explosive materials
can be detected by careful dog work. Then the party proceeded to
the concourse where a student volunteer, George Burr, took a
pre-prepared suitcase containing a small amount of ingredients for
an improvised explosive device and sat in the concourse, whilst the
dog handlers worked systematically towards him. Much to the
admiration of the students and George himself, the dogs quickly
identified the offending suitcase, and George was ‘nicked’! All
part of students’ experience of studying politics at Surrey!
Professor Marie Breen-Smyth said "Many thanks
to Inspector Dixon and his colleagues in British Transport Police
at St Pancras for making the field trip possible."

With around a hundred attendees the event

to get people communicating, both formally and informally. This
happened, with many business cards being exchanged throughout the
day.

MO-ember
As its the month of November, it has now been hijacked and
recalled MO-vember. The Mo, slang for moustache, and November come
together each year for Movember.
Starting back in 2003 in Australia, a group of men over a few
beers thought it would be funny to grow a moustache for the entire
month of November and do something for Mens Health awareness. Since
then, men have been encouraged for the month of Movember to stop
shaving and grow a moustache.
3 teams were entered by BTP (that we are aware of) in London, 2
teams by London North and 1 team by the Dog section at FHQ.
Our very own Donal MacCraith at St. Pancras and a team of
officers at London North AHQ have decided to grow a 'tash' for the
month of November and hope to raise money and make a greater
awareness to men.

who has donated to this excellent cause. Hopefully we will have
more teams and team-members next year..

Op. Cistern
This operation held between Tuesday 9th - Friday 12th February
was a joint initiative with other London North departments and was
aimed at transient crime using St. Pancras International as a port.
People on the station may have seen enhanced police activity within
the arcade. It is a careful balance for us to achieve our
operational aims and ensure that uniformed police activity does not
make people feel less safe. Various engagement tactics are employed
to ensure that the operation does not impact on law-abiding
passengers.

Not In My Neighbourhood - 2 to 6 November
2009
This event is an opportunity for local agencies, police forces
and partners to highlight the work they do. St. Pancras
Neighbourhood Policing Team will be part of this, by informing
local people, commuters and travellers of how to tackle crime in
their neighbourhood and how to make their communities safer.
Visits will be made to local schools and youth-groups to further
explain the role of BTP locally. This will be done with local
Metropolitan Police colleagues.
During the first week of November St Pancras
NPT team members PCSO’s Mark Thurston and Mick Saunders took part
in the pan London Not In My Neighbourhood Week of action to help
reduce crime and provide reassurance to our community after a
period of planning conducted by Mark, Mick and team leader Pc Rob
Horton.
Working alongside colleagues from the Somers
Town Metropolitan Police Safer Neighbourhoods Team, led by Sergeant
Gary McGovern, Mark and Mick conducted joint patrols, responding to
such incidents as a female being attacked at Euston Station and
vagrants.
In addition to the patrols the team deployed
alongside their Met. Pol. Counterparts and Camden Town Council
staff, including street wardens, to run a crime reduction stand at
the local Somers Town Community Centre , where a wide range of
community members, young and old learned about the role of the BTP
within the community. Some of the younger members got to meet some
of our four legged colleagues within the Dog Section and as always
this was enjoyable for us as well as the children .
Further joint working saw the team assist our
Met colleagues in patrolling a nearby school with the Schools
Officer. This kind of work will continue, as it promotes joint
working but also allows local youths to see first hand their local
transport Police.
In all this was an excellent opportunity to promote partnership
working and to promote the work of the British Transport Police as
part of the community.

Inspector Dixon comments "it is with great pride that I attended
the Railstaff Awards ceremony in Birmingham with Georgina Ironside.
Whilst not winning 1st place, Georgina was shortlisted having
received numerous glowing testimonials from staff at St. Pancras

terminal and a superb ambassador for British Policing."

Coach Road Operation
The NPT was recently involved in a two day operation involving
security within the Coach Road area of the station looking at
passenger and delivery vehicles. This was in conjunction
with the station Gravity teams and Metropolitan Police Traffic

of intelligent joint working.

Counter Terrorism Patrols (Wednesday
23rd September)
Joint patrols with both the BTP Counter
Terrorism Unit and Metropolitan Police saw a dramatic reduction in
crime and sound preventative advice given to numerous persons using
the station with motor vehicles. Positive feedback was received
from many members of the public in respect of both the advice given
and reassurance offered.
