Project Guardian goes Global

Project Guardian goes Global

Published: Monday, 7 April 2014

We took part in a transatlantic police operation to crackdown on unwanted sexual behaviour committed on public transport networks.

The operation, called Global Guardian, ran from 7 to 11 April 2014 and involved Metro Vancouver Transit Police, Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA Transit Police) and Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), along with Project Guardian partners.

Global Guardian saw an increase of uniformed and plain clothes officers stepping up patrols on trains, buses, tubes and metro services. They were advising the travelling public about the initiative as well as identifying any suspicious behaviour across the transport networks.

Global Guardian aimed to improve the levels of reporting among victims of sexual offences, which often go unreported, and to create an environment on public transport networks around the world which does not tolerate intimidation and sexual harassment.

Each police force used the hashtag #GlobalGuardian to raise awareness of the campaign throughout the week of action.
