PC Jack hunts down missing Wilbur

19 January 2016
This week's blog is the story of Wilbur the runaway dog in Hove, Sussex.

Wilbur and PC Jack HunterPC Jack Hunter is more used to tracking down criminals, but on Monday, 18 January he put his skills to a different test. A dog walker became distressed when his terrier, Wilbur, ran through heavy undergrowth and underneath fencing and became trapped on the railway lines.

After attempting to call the dog back, PC Hunter went trackside at Hove station and began the lengthy and arduous walk to the dog, despite live rails and oncoming trains.

The determined officer located Wilbur halfway up a steep 50-foot embankment. He scaled the steep slope and was able to secure the errant hound.

Temporary Sergeant Russell Stobbs was full of praise for PC Hunter, remarking: “Jack showed a determined professionalism during this incident, reaffirming that the role of police is not just dealing with crime.

“It’s important to remember that if you lose anything on the tracks, dog or otherwise, please contact us or Network Rail. Don't attempt to recover it yourself; it puts lives at risk”.
