Update From Superintendent Susan Peters - BTP Tactical Lead for Stop and Search

Sue

Current focus

There is a lot going on to help improve our public engagement and invite the public to ‘ride along’ with us on a patrol. We also have a vast number of body worn video cameras worn by our officers. It is good practice to use these and provides transparency, as well as demonstrating the challenges our officers sometimes face when engaging with people who are being searched.

Section 60

Section 60 is a term you will increasingly hear in mainstream media – this power is to help us prevent violence and keep people safe. We continue to use it very wisely and are held to account by an authorisation process in the form of scrutiny panels, who help monitor its use and effectiveness.

July figures

We also want to share with you our overall data as of July, which we share with our communities under the best use of stop search scheme (BUSSS). This shows that we are working in the interests of communities and the below graphic helps us demonstrate how we do this. If you have any questions relating to our use of stop and search, please contact stopsearch@btp.pnn.police.uk.
