Millions of people use the railway in England,
Scotland and Wales every day. Some of those people are vulnerable
and rely on the police and our partners to help them and keep them
safe.
We’ve teamed up with Railway
Children – a charity that supports children who
run away or are forced to leave home – to develop the
Safeguarding on Transport programme. Together,
we work to raise awareness across the rail industry about how to
identify and protect people at risk on our rail network.
The programme originally focused on working
with children, but the approach was so successful, we widened it
out to include vulnerable adults too.

How it works
Together, we train individuals working in the rail industry to
become Safeguarding on Transport Champions. We rely on them to then
share their knowledge with others working in their organisation and
help us reach thousands of people working across the industry.
Our champions train others to:
- be aware of vulnerable people on transport
- be concerned about their welfare
- listen to what they have to say
- reassure, showing kindness and consideration
- report concerns to BTP
