Introduction
The purpose of the Community and Race
Relations Strategy is to enable British Transport
Police to confirm our commitment to the community we police, and to
explain how we will continue to improve the service we deliver. To
help us do this we need, and want, your views which we can then
take into account when developing plans for policing the
railways.
Consultation
To do our job well and develop our policing
plan, we need to respond to your needs. This is why we regularly
consult you, either directly or indirectly through other partners,
by conducting opinion surveys or holding meetings within the rail
industry or local communities. However you are consulted, we value
your opinions.
Accountability
We are accountable on many levels. The Chief Constable is
accountable to the British Transport Police Authority who represent
the funding partners who make up the rail industry and provide
policing resources.
Each Area Commander is accountable to the Chief Constable. They
have a fundamental part to play in working with the rail industry
and other agencies to help us do our jobs and improve community
safety. Each Area Commander meets locally with
representatives from the train operating companies that operate in
their Areas, transport system operators and freight companies. They
also attend Passenger Transport Authority meetings and those of the
Rail Passengers’ Councils.
We also provide an opportunity for rail or
passenger-related organisations to discuss crime trends with
us and how we are dealing with them.
Partnerships
We talk to a range of individuals and
agencies to find out what you – our community – really need.
Consultation, partnerships and accountability are central
to these partnerships, ensuring we are as effective and
efficient as possible.
We have many responsibilities to you and we
are keen to build effective relationships with you. Some of you are
customers who use Britain's railways, or other transport
facilities we police, for travelling around the country or
delivering goods. Some of you are service providers, perhaps
working directly within the rail industry or providing its
services. Or you may be a member of the wider community, not
working within the railway industry but somehow associated with it.
Whatever your relationship with the railway, we want to make sure
we are serving you well.
A complex web of partnerships helps us do our
job and pursue our strategic aims and we're constantly looking for
new partnerships which can help us to better serve you. We also
review our existing partnerships regularly to make sure we are
deploying resources to the best of our abilities.
Monitoring
and Evaluation
We are currently collecting and maintaining
appropriate performance indicators, which are published
regularly. The British Transport Police Authority ensures Her
Majesty's Inspector of Constabulary regularly reviews our
performance. These processes help us identify relevant
performance information so we can evaluate and improve our
performance.
The Chief Constable is responsible for this
strategy, and it is monitored by the Assistant Chief Constable
(Scotland), who is responsible for taking this strategy forward
across the country. Area Commanders are responsible for
implementing it throughout the Force.
Race Equality Documentation
In May 2008 BTP launched its new Equality
Scheme and Action Plan (2008-2011). This single equality scheme
incorporates all of BTP's legal duties. It sets a platform for our
aspirations to become an employer of choice providing services that
meet the needs of all the communities we serve. A copy of this
scheme can be downloaded through the links below.
